Jars are empty, so fill them with herbs and spices from your pantry.

  • Small jars hold a scant 1/4 cup volume, measuring 2" tall x 1.75" wide
  • Large jars hold a heaping 1/2 cup volume, measuring 2.5” x 2.5”
  • We recommend choosing jar size based on the spices you can use in 12 months. Smaller amounts of spice stay fresh.

Most grocery store spices bottles are made of disposable plastic. You can avoid this waste by bringing our jars to your local natural food store to refill or buying plastic-free refills through Gneiss Spice.

    What's included in the Set of 12?

    12 hexagonal magnetic spice jars (your choice of all small or all large) with airtight silver lids, plus clear labels for the 200 most common spice names. The jars are empty, so you'll fill them with spices from your pantry, a bulk store, or our 300+ organic refills. You can also add a wall plate to your order if you want to mount them somewhere non-magnetic.

    Which size jar should I buy?

    SMALL JARS: If you have access to loose/bulk spices at a natural food store, we recommend using small jars and refilling often. Your spices will always be fresh and will improve the quality of your cooking. If you do not have a bulk spice section at your grocery store, you can buy jars pre-filled or buy small refills from us! Small jars hold a shy 1/4 cup volume of spice. They are 2" tall x 1.75" wide, with a mouth opening of 1.25" across.

    LARGE JARS: If you cook a lot, go with our larger jars! Large jars are similar to a typical grocery store container, and are a good option if you'll be transferring from standard spice containers. Large jars hold a heaping 1/2 cup. They are 2.5" x 2.5" with a mouth opening of 1.82" across.

    Many people use a combination of small and large jars. A good rule of thumb is if a recipe usually calls for 1/2 tsp or less, you may want a small jar. Spices should be used up in 6-12 months. The vision of Gneiss Spice is to create a system where spices are easy to use, stay fresh and flavorful, and you are organized to know what you have. No more duplicates!

    Does this come with a wall plate?

    Up to you! You can opt to include a wall plate or not. Choose between 10x12, 12x15, 20x10, 24x12, 16x20 inch options.

    Is 12 jars enough?

    For many home cooks, yes—12 jars cover the most-used spices in a typical kitchen (think salt, pepper, garlic, cinnamon, paprika, cumin, oregano, etc.). If you cook a wider range of cuisines or like having options, you may want to start with 24 or plan to expand over time. You can always add single jars later.

    Do I need a wall plate?

    Only if you don't have a magnetic surface to stick the jars on. The jars work straight out of the box on any magnetic surface—fridges, stainless steel range hoods, metal backsplashes.

    The jars are empty — how do I fill them?

    You've got options. You can refill from a bulk spice section at a natural foods store (our favorite — fresh and plastic-free), transfer from spices you already have at home, or shop our 300+ organic spice refills which ship in compostable packaging.
